Subject:Monday Night Roleplaying: Ptolus
Time:11:00 pm
I had much fun tonight when we kicked off our D&D campaign. I'm not one for play reports mainly because I'm too lazy, but there was much hilarity! For a D20 game there was actually a lot of roleplaying too! Some of my favourite moments are as follows:

[info]menchi's PC owned the townhouse where our characters were staying. There were only two bedrooms and 3 male characters and my female character. There was discussion where we would be sleeping which ended up with [info]muggledepuggle's halfling opting to sleep in the room under the stairs, while [info]mashugenah's Dwarf pitched his tent in the middle of the lounge.

[info]mashugenah proving that all Dwarves speak with a very thick Scottish accent. As the night went on he be came more and more incomprehensible. I especially liked his laughing at his own dirty jokes that no one else in the room could actually make out and punctuating his rants with hand gestures.

First action as a D&D party off to find adventure. Buy and eat sticky buns and pastries from the bakery!

All the lewd comments aimed at my female Paladin. You can guess the comments made when the mage cast enlarge on her during combat ;)

[info]menchi's swashbuckler character and all his indiscriminate flirting.

[info]wyldcard as the ghost obsessed villager who insisted on accompanying us into the 'haunted' house after tasking us with investigating it and the smartass goblins who wouldn't give up.

[info]muggledepuggle's halfing with his badass riding dog. Her character was also indebted to a loan shark before the game even started due to the cost of said riding dog!

Anyway, I really like all the characters in the party and the dynamic of the characters/players, so far it's been heaps of fun :)

Subject:Exalted and my skills as a GM
Time:11:09 pm
Current Mood:blahblah
So I haven't posted anything online for quite some time now, let alone on LJ. I've also neglected my Wordpress presence which is a shame, cause I had a good thing going for a while.

A lot of this neglect has come from being pretty busy and incredibly lazy at the same time. It's work, seeing friends, weekends with Sass, many videogames to pay attention to and any extra time ought to be put into working on the Exalted Campaign that I'm running. All these things are really good, just tends to mean I run out of time.

What I wanted to mention were my recent experiences as a GM. We just finished the 3rd session of Exalted tonight and I'm little uncertain about how things are going from my perspective.

Most of my uncertainty revolves around my skill as a GM. The only other campaign I've ever run was the first version of this story, Exalted: Red Suns Rising. That came at a time when myself and most of the players were new to the world of Exalted; so were less familiar with its inhabitants, as well as the conventions and specifics of the setting. As players, they now have a lot more knowledge about Exalted, much more than I do. This makes it hard to present an original story when it's expected that it must be consistent with all the particulars set down in the multitude of books which describe the world of Exalted.

It's also become quite apparent that I don't do so well with improvising and making things up when I fear that it will not be consistent with the setting I'm working with. I have become known for the wacky con scenarios that I've run where I'm totally at liberty to come up with what ever I want to, it just needs to be hilarious or awesome. I don't feel that I have the same freedom when I need to create a campaign with an overarching story that needs to be coherent, with plot elements being introduced ahead of time to be explained at a later stage.

I've also noticed that I've become a little bit crap at roleplaying recently. I'm not sure what happened, but I've been quite hesitant to get into characters and find myself to be a little less witty and struggle with words sometimes. It could be that I've not read all that much for a decent length of time, so my vocabulary doesn't always serve me as well as it should.

Which leads me to the issues I have with describing scenes, making the description both interesting and succinct. I'm really suffering from the waffling on at the moment. Part of this is because I will often right superb boxed text with exactly what I want to say, but I want to engage with my players. This means that I try and retell it as I remember, but it never comes out half as good as when I wrote it and I often miss some salient points which I need to try and stuff back in there.

Overall, not really sure what this post is about, but I mean to say that I'm working on a lot of things to make this campaign much more interesting for my players. After tonight, I think I have a good handle on what makes a combat fun for everyone (it only took three, the one that worked happened to also be the least relevant to the story).

I've also been stringing the characters along with mystery after mystery so far, which can't be very satisfying for them. Which is to say, in the sessions to come, hopefully the players will get a few answers and also be presented with elements from their characters individual histories.

I'm also more confident now that combats are not necessary. I tend to use them as I do really enjoy narrating action and hearing stunts that my players come up with, but I do tend to fall back on them when I'm lacking in imagination. That being said, the three fights in the three sessions so far were intended from the beginning so I make no apologies :)

Anyway, I'm sleepy so I must go to bed.

I just never post on here these days :)

Some cool tunes in my latest entry:
http://thepandapitt.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/bouncy-bounce-bounce/

I'm feeling more enthused to be writing and updating so I think I may now be a little more regular in coming weeks. Though I said that once before and it didn't work out that well...

Stuff that I've been doing since you may have last seen, heard from, or spoken to me:

Watching Television: Including re-watching Scrubs, finishing off Season 4 Supernatural, Dollhouse, Skins, a bunch of stand up comedy DVDs and going back to watching Angel.

Listening to lots of rad music: A few special mentions include: Copeland, The National, The Postal Service, Bloc Party, Los Campesinos, Metric, Arcade Fire, MSTRKRFT, Thievery Corporation, a few random bits and pieces and all the old favorites.

Watching the odd movie or going to the theatre: Most recently, it was Wolverine and seeing Midsummer Night's Dream by Stagecraft.

Playing PS3, Xbox 360 etc: Saints Row 2, Infamous, A little bit of Rockband, also occasionally getting back into Mass Effect and a few other titles.

Other mentions go to hanging with my lovely girl in weekends, friends, Dark Heresy every couple of Mondays and sorting out flat necessities.

I'm looking forward to getting back into Star Wars and hopefully that also means that some WFRP will not be too far away either. I'm also excited about the new CTech releases, which should also give me the enthusiasm to finish two scenarios I've been working on very occasionally.

Also, I need to organize something to celebrate my birthday; it's the weekend that is made up of 18th-19th of April. Any suggestions? I've got some plans but will need to think a little bit on it.

More about this in the near future :)

Subject:Technology total fail.
Time:06:04 pm

Today my Ipod has dropped it's charge after less then hour on two particular occasions (before and after work). I suspect that it's coming to the end of it's days. To be fair, I've had it for three or so years and it's been really reliable, so I can't complain too much. It's still pretty annoying though because it's the last piece of technology which I have that hasn't crapped out in one way or another. It now gets to join my many many years old laptop (which is completely full), old mini-system (the CD tray of which has seized up) and old brick of a phone which randomly turns off.

All these pieces of tech are working to some extent, but now everything I have is old and bit busted.

*sigh* I guess I'm gonna have to start saving to actually buy something that works. :/

Margie tells me that she is going to buy 5 pieces of pie and a milkshake from Burger King. This idea for dinner gives me a strong case of the funnies. :)
